What is Refractive (LASIK) Eye Treatment?

LASIK, short for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a highly advanced surgical procedure designed to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. This revolutionary technique permanently reshapes the cornea, the transparent front surface of the eye, akin to a watch glass. This reshaping is achieved using a precision laser known as an excimer laser. By altering the cornea's shape, LASIK ensures that light focuses accurately on the retina at the back of the eye, resulting in crystal-clear vision without needing glasses or contacts. LASIK effectively treats common refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

About LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK is a quick and virtually painless procedure, typically taking 10-15 minutes to treat both eyes.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

  • It would help if you were at least 18 years old and preferred individuals over 21 when vision tends to stabilise.
  • Your eyeglass prescription should have remained consistent over the past year.
  • Your refractive error must fall within the FDA-approved range, including a maximum of minus twelve for myopia, six for hyperopia, and six cylindrical powers for astigmatism.
  • Your corneas should possess adequate thickness and health, and your overall eye health must be generally sound.
  • Who Is Not a Suitable Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

  • An unstable or fluctuating refractive error.
  • Extreme levels of myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
  • Severe dry eye conditions
  • Thin corneas
  • Corneal scars or diseases
  • Keratoconus (a condition characterised by a cone-shaped cornea)

  • A history of certain eye infections
  • Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus
  • Pregnant or lactating women (since vision changes can occur)

    4. Cycloplegic Refraction

Your refractive error will be accurately verified by dilating the eyes and by cycloplegic refraction.

    5. Retina Periphery

The retina periphery will be evaluated for any treatable lesions.

    Precautions

    Before the Procedure:

    a) If you wear contact lenses, it is advisable to discontinue them in advance, with specific timelines based on the type of lenses you use.

    - Soft contact lenses: Discontinue two weeks before.
    - Toric soft contact lenses or rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses: Discontinue three weeks before
    - Hard lenses: Discontinue four weeks before

    b) Provide a comprehensive medical and eye history, including information about past or current medications, over-the-counter drugs, and allergies.

    c) The day before the surgery, refrain from using creams, lotions, perfumes, cosmetics, or any products near the eyes, as these may increase the risk of infection during and after the procedure.

    After the Procedure:

You should schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor within 24 to 48 hours after surgery and continue with regular check-ups for at least the initial six months.

You will receive guidance on resuming various activities:
    - Non-contact sports can typically be resumed after three days.
    - Strenuous exercises and contact sports may be resumed after four weeks.
    - Swimming can usually be resumed after two months.
    - Using makeup, creams, and lotions can be resumed after four weeks.

Contact your eye doctor immediately if you experience any new, unusual, or worsening symptoms after surgery.

    On the Day of LASIK:

You will be taken to the LASIK Suite and positioned on your back on an operating table. Your eye will receive numbing drops, and the area around your eye will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution. The surgeon will use a speculum to keep your eyelids open during the procedure.

The cornea flap will be created either with a microkeratome (Blade LASIK) or a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser (Bladeless LASIK). Your surgeon will lift and fold back the flap before precisely applying the laser to your eye. You'll be instructed to focus on a light, and the laser will commence once your vision is accurately aligned. During this phase, you might notice new sounds and smells. The flap is carefully repositioned after the laser completes its work, vaporising the corneal tissue.

Following the procedure, your eye may experience sensations such as burning, itching, or the feeling of a foreign object. It's vital not to touch your eye, as rubbing it could dislodge the flap, potentially requiring further treatment. The doctor and staff will provide instructions for post-operative care and medications.
