What is Uveitis?

Uveitis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the middle layer of the eyeball, known as the uvea. This layer is vital in nourishing the eye, as it is rich in blood vessels. Uveitis can significantly threaten your vision by potentially causing permanent damage to crucial eye tissues.

About Uveitis Eye Surgery

Recognising Uveitis Warning Signs

  • Uveitis warning signs can manifest suddenly and rapidly worsen. These symptoms include: Eye redness, Eye pain, Blurred or cloudy vision It's important to note that uveitis can affect either one or both eyes and can affect individuals of all ages, including children. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent complications and preserve your eyesight.
  • Understanding the Types of Uveitis

  • There are 3 types of uveitis. They are based on which part of the uvea is affected.
  • Swelling of the uvea near the front of the eye is called anterior uveitis. It starts suddenly and symptoms can last many weeks. Some forms of anterior uveitis are ongoing, while others go away but keep coming back called as recurrent anterior uveitis.
  • Swelling of the uvea in the middle of the eye is called intermediate uveitis. Symptoms can last for a few weeks to many years. They often cause clouding of vision with tendency for recurrence.
  • Swelling of the uvea toward the back of the eye is called posterior uveitis. Symptoms can develop gradually and last for many years.
  • In severe cases, all layers may be involved called as panuveitis like in cases of Tuberculosis etc.
  • Causes and Treatment

Medicines called steroids can reduce inflammation in your eye. This can ease symptoms and prevent vision loss. Your eye doctor may prescribe steroids in a few different ways:

Eye drops. Prescription eye drops are the most common treatment.

Pills. Your eye doctor may also prescribe steroids as a pill.

Injections. In some cases, your eye doctor might put the steroid in or around your eye with a small needle.

Implants. If other treatments don’t work, your doctor might suggest surgery to put a small device called an implant into your eye. The implant gives you regular small doses of the steroid over time.
It's important to note that steroids can have side effects and may increase the risk of cataracts and glaucoma. Regular eye exams are crucial to monitor for any signs of these issues, and adhering to your treating eye doctor's follow-up schedule is essential. In addition to steroid treatment, your treating doctor may recommend immunomodulator therapy or biologicals to modulate the immune system's response. They may also advise consulting a rheumatologist for specialised care, emphasising a multi-disciplinary approach to managing uveitis.
